Dive into the history of cinema like never before: the first-ever online exhibition on Cahiers du cinéma is now available on Google Arts & Culture.
Discover the history of what is recognized as the most prestigious French trade publication on the film industry.
Since its creation in 1951, Cahiers du cinéma has been an essential platform for criticism and debate, shaping our understanding and vision of cinema.
As the original print issues have become largely difficult to access, particularly outside of France, this initiative ensures the accessibility of this invaluable resource worldwide.
Our complete digital archives
Google Arts & Culture has digitized 820 issues spanning 74 years of publication. This represents over 70,000 pages of the magazine, making it one of Google Arts & Culture’s largest digitization projects.
The online exhibition dedicated to Cahiers du cinéma features over 30 articles and over 1,000 images detailing its history and connection to French cinema.
AI for discovery and research
Artificial intelligence (AI) played a vital role in facilitating access and navigation through this vast historical resource. Specifically, Gemini was deployed to automatically generate summaries for each of the 820 issues.
These summaries are a key feature for exploring Cahiers issues, easily accessible on the cover page of each issue on Google Arts & Culture, as well as on the magazine’s new website.
“This collaboration celebrates the unique perspective and rich legacy of film criticism that this archive embodies. By leveraging AI to generate summaries of archived copies, we are opening up new dimensions for exploring this incredible collection,” said Amit Sood, Director of Google Arts & Culture.
